Leading companies launch online portal for responsible supply chain management

BRUSSELS, December 4, 2008 - CSR Europe today unveiled an online Portal which provides guidance for companies to drive environmental and social improvements in their supply chain. The Portal for Responsible Supply Chain Management (www.csr-supplychain.org) consolidates expertise gathered from thousands of supplier audits and training sessions undertaken by large international companies from various industries, for example HP, L'Oréal, Titan, Volkswagen, GDF Suez, Epson, etc.

HP, L'Oréal, Titan and Volkswagen play a leading role in the European CSR Laboratory on Responsible Supply Chain Management, which is facilitated by CSR Europe, together with the Business Social Compliance Initiative and the Hellenic Network for CSR. The Portal is the result of cooperation between companies, stakeholders and policy makers in the CSR Laboratory.

Rising consumer demands for ethically produced goods have put increased pressure on suppliers to meet strict social and environmental standards. The new Portal provides information on best practices, international standards and principles, as well as background information on a number of themes, e.g. compensation or forced labour. "HP has the largest supply chain in the technology sector, and to effectively address our social and environmental impact we need to engage our suppliers," said Karl Daumüller, programme manager, HP global procurement services. "From our experience, small companies are looking for a consolidated set of requirements and guidance from larger companies and that is what this portal provides."

"TITAN is engaged in a consensual approach to stakeholder relations. The responsible supply chain management portal is a tool to meet our endeavors in the supply chain providing a learning and sharing platform which not only facilitates a better understanding of CSR standards, principles and practices but also helps all key actors in the supply chain and particularly SMEs to engage themselves in a proactive approach regarding environmental and social issues", says Maria Alexiou, CSR Manager at Titan.

"L'Oréal's purchasing approach is centred on our Buy and Care programme-a commitment to long-lasting relations with our suppliers, involving joint efforts to promote growth, business opportunities abroad, innovation, encouraging high-quality and frequent exchanges of information. This portal will facilitate and enhance good practices on CSR issues for all members of the supply chain" says Ariane Thomas, Head of Supplier Performance management, L'Oreal Corporate Purchasing Department.

"The communication and promotion of the portal will be a priority for the Laboratory in the coming year," says Dr. Gerhard Praetorius, Head of Coordination CSR and Sustainability at Volkswagen. "Volkswagen will make use of its media contacts, training activities and its relevant events in order to contribute to the dissemination process. In addition, we would also like to involve the national CSR networks like econsense in Germany to multiply and fasten the communication process."

The Portal was launched on 4 December in Brussels as part of CSR Europe's Toolbox (www.csreurope.org/toolbox), a collection of business tools, network models and information resources designed to help companies and their stakeholders address social and environmental challenges and integrate corporate social responsibility (CSR) into mainstream business practice. The Toolbox is based on 18 months of cross-sector cooperation in twenty CSR Laboratory projects tackling a wide range of CSR issues and involving hundreds of business and stakeholder representatives under the umbrella of the European Alliance for CSR, an initiative launched in 2006 by the European business community with the strong backing of the European Commission.
